Do you even lift? Washington, DC, 1924.
What do you suppose this rig does? It looks more involved than just a lift.

It’s similar to a dyno, so I’m guessing it’s for checking wheels/tires for true. Or it could just be a dyno.

I think the added complexity is a winch for non-running cars .

I doubt that’s a dyno considering how old that is. I’m guessing it’s a wooden wheel truer/alignment rack.
Total guess tho.

I don’t want to live on this planet any more.
I used to say, “I’m sure there’s more to the story than is being reported.” I don’t think that any more.

That looks like an oil can with a pump attached. I wonder if it isn’t some sort of lube station. The original caption identifies it as a Havoline station.

I’m guessing something like a dyno like others said, but more meant for a means of diagnosing a “driving” vehicle while stationary.

Thats what I thought at first too, but that axle looking thing on the left throws me off.

I don’t know but I need it. Semi portable ramp platform? Yes please

The “Lift” is a chassis dynamometer or rolling road. The big “oil can” is a Gasometer, a primitive cylinder leak down testing device.

The can says “gasometer measures leakage past pistons”. My guess is that the assembly under the rear wheels is just a way to vary the load on the engine. The man holding the lever can adjust something that increase resistance to the wheels. The can and hose towards the front may go to one cylinder to check compression by measuring pressure in the crankcase. Compression in each cylinder may vary too much to put a pressure gauge in a spark-plug opening, but you could check the whole engine at once by checking the crankcase. It’s crude, but it would match the technology of the time.

What cracks me up about a lot of these vintage photos is that the theme always seems to be “a bunch of men sitting around watching other men work”.

I think they way the men are dressed says a lot about how much work they actually do.
